Shimoga/Shivamogga (Kannada: ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗ) being the heart of the Malnad region is a very beautiful place. Its the district head quarters of Shimoga District located in the central part of Karnataka. The beautiful landscaping, water falls, mountains, forests, rivers, ... make this district a hot tourist destination. Once being called as a pensioner's paradise now the city has become more commercialized. The name of the city is derived from Shiva Mukha meaning the Face of Lord Shiva.

The History of Shivamogga dates back from Mauryan empire, later Kadambas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara & finally Keladi Nayakas. The city got importance & independent identity during the rule of Keladi Shivappa Nayaka. Later it was part of the Kingdom of Mysore till the state of Karnataka was formed.

By Train:
Shimoga is connected by broad gauge line from Birur Junction. From Birur Jn one can go towards Bengaluru/Mysuru or towards Hubballi/Mumbai/Delhi & other North Indian cities. Birur is around 65 km from Shimoga. There are direct trains from Bengaluru to Shimoga both in the night & day time (Express & Intercity trains)

By Air:
A new airport is coming up near Machenahalli SEZ in between Shimoga & Bhadravati, not sure when it gets completed. Otherwise the nearest airports to Shimoga are Mangalore Bajpe Airport (185 km), Hubballi Airport (200 km), Bengaluru International Airport (300 km)

* Purdal/Puradalu Lake (12 km)
- This is a beautiful scenic lake surrounded by mountains very near to the city. A famous reality show in Kannada "Pyate Hudgir Halli Life" was filmed here

* Gajanur Dam (12 km towards Thirthahalli, its a dam for Tunga river)
* Sakkare Bayalu (14 km towards Thirthahalli)
- Located on the banks of Tunga reservoir, its an Elephant camp where every morning elephants come to take bath here & proceed towards the forest. Reach to this place before 9:00 am so that you get to see good number of elephants.

Climate:
Weather used to be pleasant few years back, but now a days due to commercialization, de-forestation, industrialization, ... the temperature during summer goes to 41 degree centigrade also. Best time to visit is August to Feb when the climate is very pleasant.
