Kanchipuram or shortly called as just Kanchi is a district head quarters of the Kanchipuram District in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Kanchi is popular for mainly two things, one off-course is for the Temple & the other one is for the Silk Sarees. The city names are generally associated with the God/Godess of the famous temples in that city, like Kanchi - Kamakshi, Madurai - Meenakshi. So here in Kanchi, the famous temple is the Kamakshi Amman Temple which is dedicated to Godess Parvathi.
The silk sarees of Kanchi are very famous, they are hand woven so you get a variety of designs. Many people from different states also come to purchase sarees for marriages here as you can get sarees for a min of 10-15% less than the shops in any other place. Babu Sah is a very famous saree shop in Kanchi which has huge variety of different price range sarees.
From Chennai: Its around 75 km (Takes around 2 hrs)
Take the NH4 road towards Bengaluru & near the Ponneri Lake which is around 70 km from Chennai, take left towards Kanchi, after 5 km, you reach the destination.
From Bengaluru: Its around 280 km (Takes around 3-4 Hrs)
Take the NH7 road towards Chennai
Route: Bengaluru --> Hosur --> Krishnagiri --> Ambur --> Vellore --> Kanchi
NH4 & NH7 are 2+2 lane highways which comes under Golden Quadrilateral, so the roads are extremely good.
There are a lot of Buses from the Tamil Nadu state road transport corporation to Kanchi from Chennai & even other cities are well connected to Kanchi. From Bengaluru there are buses from KSRTC & SETC as well.

* Saravana Bhavan is a very good place to eat. Though its little expensive, the taste is too good. But quantity is too less :-(
