Shri Manjunatheshwara Swamy Temple, Dharmasthala, Karnataka

Dharmasthala is a Temple town in the Dakshina Kannada district of the Indian state of Karnataka. Its a very popular pilgrimage center for many Hindus & Jains. Dharmasthala is located on the banks of River Netravathi & surrounded by thick forest. This place is know for the very famous Shri Manjunatheshwara Temple which houses the shrine of Lord Shiva. The Temple & the whole of Dharmasthala & Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara (SDM) Trust, is administered by the Jain community & presently its headed by Dharmadhikari, Padmabhushan Dr. Veerendra Heggade.


This Temple, originally the house of a couple who were the followers of Lord Shiva has a history of 800 yrs. A lot of pilgrims visit this Temple every day. The accommodation for the pilgrims at a very reasonable rates is done by the Temple trust. A free prasada every day in the afternoon & night is provided for all visitors. One can also meet & get the blessings of Dr. Veerendra Heggade. The SDM trust runs many schools & professional course colleges in coastal & northern Karnataka. The SDM trust runs, Medical, Dental, Engineering & PU colleges in the educational city of Dharwad. It also has lot of colleges in Mangalore & other parts of Dakshin Kannada.

By Train: Convenient place to come by train is to reach Mangalore & then take a bus from Mangalore to Dharmasthala. Mangalore is connected by train from different places like Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, Cochin, Trivandrum, ...

Karthika Somavara:

Karthika Somavara which usually happens to be in end of November or beginning December of the calendar year or the Karthika masa of Hindu calendar. Mondays in this period is observed as Karthika Somavara (Karthika Somavaram). Its an auspicious day dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. In Dharmasthala there will be a special pooja & big fair with all the light decorations to the Temple & the whole of Dharmasthala town, also called Laksha Deepotsava (Million lights).
